Taste not time

Govardhana Hill, India

Everyone is allotted twenty-four hours in a day, so why do some people seem to have more time than others to chant japa?

The answer is that it is taste not time that regulates one’s chanting.

As a person develops taste for any activity, his or her dedication for it increases.

A devotee who likes to chant Hare Krsna will do so regularly and with alacrity.

Krsna’s names are full of spiritual juice, the kind that fully satisfy the soul and that make one happy.

But if one currently has no taste for the holy names, Haridasa Thakura advises one to learn and avoid the ten offences to the holy name. As the chanter’s offences decrease, his or her taste for the holy names naturally increases; for it is offences only that cover our taste for the holy names.

As one’s taste for chanting increases, so too does one’s perfect happiness in life.

Goddess Sarasvati told Brahma:

“O Brahma, do thou practice spiritual association by means of this mantra; then all your desires will be fulfilled.” (Brahma Samhita 25)

With gratitude and affection,

Vaisesika Dasa
