The Lord speaks to us from within our hearts. Some choose to listen to Him whereas others choose to ignore Him. In the Gita, Krishna tells us that if we sincerely try to listen to Him, we will avoid so much suffering.
“If you become conscious of Me, you will pass over all the obstacles of conditioned life by My grace. If, however, you do not work in such consciousness but act through false ego, not hearing Me, you will be lost.” (Bhagavad-gita 18.58)
People commonly note that they have an “inner voice.” For example, H.L. Mencken writes:
“Conscience is the inner voice that warns us somebody may be looking.”
What’s more, people intuit that their inner voice is giving them good advice. To this end, Joyce Meyer writes:
“Character is doing what you don’t want to do but know you should do.”
Bhakti yogis not only take direction from the spiritual master, the scripture, and advanced bhakti practitioners, they also consult their good conscience as a means of finding their way out of the darkness of the material world.
To such conscientious persons, the Lord gives special mercy:
“To show them special mercy, I, dwelling in their hearts, destroy with the shining lamp of knowledge the darkness born of ignorance.” (Bhagavad-gita 10.11)
