Valmiki Rsi, formally a hunter, became a perfectly pure devotee, saw the pastimes of Lord Rama in his heart, and compiled the Ramayana. All this he achieved by the mercy of his spiritual master, Narada Muni and the holy names.
From any position, even a lowly one, anyone can become a perfectly pure devotee by taking shelter of a Vaisnava and the holy names.
“We may conclude that even as dogs we must take shelter of a Vaisnava. The benefit will be the same as that which accrues to an advanced devotee under a Vaisnava’s care.” (Cc Antya 1.24, purport)
“From Sanat-kumara it is understood that even if a person is a severe offender in many ways, he is freed from offensive life if he takes shelter of the Lord’s holy name. Indeed, even if a human being is no better than a two-legged animal, he will be liberated if he takes shelter of the holy name of the Lord.” (SB 7.5.23, purport)
