After once seeing Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, the brothers, Sakara Mallik and Dabhir Khas, urgently desired to leave their family life and government employment to join Him. However, it would take some time and a great deal of effort for them to do this.
While still tied to their worldly responsibilities, the brothers had written letters to Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu expressing their desire to dedicate their lives to His service.
Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu knowing their heart’s desires, had sent them back this verse:
“If a woman is attached to a man other than her husband, she will appear very busy in carrying out her household affairs, but within her heart she is always relishing feelings of association with her paramour.”
In other words, Mahaprabhu told them to continue with their duties while internally cultivating a desire to serve Him.
After receiving and following Mahaprabhu’s instructions, Sakara Mallik and Dabhir Khas both eventually came to join Him and to serve Him to their heart’s content throughout their lives.
In Caitanya Caritamrta, Kaviraja Goswami tells how the brothers met Caitanya Mahaprabhu, how Mahaprabhu initiated them as Srila Rupa and Srila Sanatana, and how the Lord came to engage them in the highest spiritual service.
No matter what our situation is now, if we cultivate a burning desire in our hearts to be fully engaged in devotional service, Krsna – being fully aware of our desires — will fulfill them in miraculous ways.
In his purport to Gita 8.7, Srila Prabhupada writes:
“The Lord does not say that one should give up his prescribed duties or engagements. One can continue them and at the same time think of Krsna by chanting Hare Krsna. This will free one from material contamination and engage the mind and intelligence in Krsna. By chanting Krsna’s names, one will be transferred to the supreme planet, Krsnaloka, without a doubt.”
With gratitude and affection,
