Avenue Road

Toronto, Canada

ISKCON Toronto is located in an upscale neighborhood on Avenue Road where most of the multi-million dollar houses are made of brick and stone. Above the front entrances of these manors some owners have ornately engraved their address or family name in stone.

Walking past these opulent homes today, I imagined how in a few hundred years, the families who now live in them will be long gone and the stone addresses above their doors smoothed over by time.

This is not pessimistic thinking. Rather it is the reality of living in the material world where a living entity is served with an eviction notice the day he is born. In Gita 2.27 Krsna says, “One who has taken his birth is sure to die . . .”

The Vedas therefore call to us — tamasi ma jyotir gama! – come out of this dark material world back into the blissful light of the spiritual sky where life is eternal and full of bliss and knowledge.

There is no use in staking a claim here in this temporary world, which will be ransacked by time.

Better to make our way back to Godhead by chanting the holy names of Krsna.

With gratitude and affection,

Vaisesika Dasa
