Krishna sometimes appears in a female form called Mohini Murti. In this womanly form, the Supreme Lord stupefies the mind of even the normally peaceful Lord Siva, what to speak of ordinary living entities.
Once when the demigods and demons were engaged in a dispute over a pot of nectar, Mohini Murti appeared to bewilder the demons, to take the nectar from them, and to give it to the demigods.
Mohini Murti told the demons: “My dear demons, if you accept whatever I may do, whether honest or dishonest, then I can take responsibility for dividing the nectar among you.” (SB 8.9.12)
Even though hinting in various ways to the demons that She was not to be trusted, the demons, enamored of Mohini Murti’s beauty, willingly handed Her the pot of nectar without considering the consequences.
In this way the demons were cheated.
In a similar way, living beings infatuated by the Lord’s external energy, Maya – personified by Goddess Durga – give up their freedom and irrationally accept the accommodations she gives them in the prison house of the material world.
Spellbound by Durga’s beauty and her promise of future enjoyment (which never comes), conditioned souls tolerate disease, old age, death and bloody disasters of every description.
In this way a conditioned soul is cheated.
“Due to a lack of knowledge of self, we become victimized by the force of ignorance and thus spoil the valuable energy of human life in a vain search after permanent living conditions, which are impossible in this material world. (SB 2.1.4; purport) Foolish creatures are enamored by the beauty of matter and think that the enjoyment it offers is real, but actually that is not real enjoyment.” (SB 3.20.35; purport)
