In the Nectar of Instruction, Srila Prabhupada writes that the International Society for Krishna Consciousness has been established to facilitate the six kinds of loving exchanges between devotees listed by Srila Rupa Gosvami in his Upadesamrta.
Among these six exchanges is gift giving.
Srila Prabhupada mentions that he started the Krishna consciousness movement single-handedly, but that because he focused on giving transcendental gifts to others in the form of books and magazines about Krishna, people liberally reciprocated, and voluntarily came forward to help him expand the sankirtana movement.
Just by the simple and natural act of giving transcendental gifts to others, bhakti yogis not only spread the sankirtana movement, but they also advance in Krishna consciousness.
Miraculously, the more one gives Krishna to others, the more one’s own Krishna consciousness increases.
The example for this was set by Lord Caitanya and His associates and is described as follows:
“Although the members of the Panca-tattva plundered the storehouse of love of Godhead and ate and distributed its contents, there was no scarcity, for this wonderful storehouse is so complete that as the love is distributed, the supply increases hundreds of times.” (Cc Adi-lila 7.24)
