In his book, Getting Things Done , David Allen says that whatever progress one wants to make or whatever project one wants to complete requires a “next step.”
He suggests that one identify the next easily achievable step and then take it, as this is practically all that anyone can do.
A man or woman who bravely takes a series of achievable “next steps” can complete even the most complex or daunting projects.
To progress on the bhakti path one must also continually seek out one’s achievable next step and take it.
A Godbrother once told me, “If taking even the next small step seems unattainable, this is called an obstacle. To overcome obstacles we need mercy, which we must try for by becoming humble and praying to the Lord and His devotees for their help.”
While writing the Caitanya Caritamrita, author Kaviraja Goswami humbly prays to the devotees for their help like this:
“My path is very difficult. I am blind, and my feet are slipping again and again. Therefore, may the saints help me by granting me the stick of their mercy as my support. ” (Cc Antya 1.1, 2)
Here’s one of my favorite prayers with which I regularly call for Lord’s help:
“ O my Lord, as powerful as fire, O omnipotent one, now I offer You all obeisances, falling on the ground at Your feet. O my Lord, please lead me on the right path to reach You, and since You know all that I have done in the past, please free me from the reactions to my past sins so that there will be no hindrance to my progress.” (ISO 18)
Today, look for your next achievable step on the bhakti path – no matter how small – and take it. And in all circumstances, pray for help.
