The Vedas say – Asango hy ayam purusah: A living being is always separate from the material energy. Indeed, one’s only connections to this world of matter are one’s attachments to it. Otherwise, factually, we are always aloof.
“As the moon reflected on water appears to the seer to tremble due to being associated with the quality of the water, so the self associated with matter appears to be qualified as matter. But that misconception of self-identity can be diminished gradually by the mercy of the Personality of Godhead, Vasudeva, through the process of devotional service to the Lord in the mode of detachment.” (Srimad-bhagavatam 3.7.11-12)
