In the Caitanya Bhagavata, two stories illustrate how the Lord knows the heart of each living entity and responds accordingly.
One day, the mother-in-law of Srivasa Pandita hid in Srivasa’s home to secretly watch the dancing of Mahaprabhu during one of the nocturnal kirtanas. Although she was hidden from everyone’s sight, the Lord stopped his dancing and proclaimed that some impure person was present in the house that was hindering his usual bliss in kirtana. Upon searching the house, Srivasa found his mother-in-law hiding behind some baskets and escorted her out of the house so that Mahaprabhu could resume his ecstatic dancing.
On another occasion in the home of Srivasa, during Mahaprabhu’s mahaprakasha, (21 hours when he sat on the throne of Visnu and gave benedictions to all of his devotees), the Lord particularly noticed the service Srivasa’s housemaid who was rendering simple but selfless service to the assembled devotees. Even though Srivasa’s house was crowded with notable devotees, Mahaprabhu noted her service, pointed her out to all the devotees, and personally changed her name from Dukhi, to Sukhi.
No matter where one is in the universe, no matter what one’s present position in society, if one renders sincere, selfless service to Krishna, the Lord will take notice and reciprocate.
“The Supreme Lord walks and does not walk. He is far away, but He is very near as well. He is within everything, and yet He is outside of everything.” (Sri Isopanisad; Mantra 5)
“Krishna is within our hearts and is not at all inattentive. His only aim is to deliver us from material life. It is not that He becomes attentive to us only when we offer prayers to Him. Even before we offer our prayers, He incessantly tries to deliver us. He is never lazy in regard to our deliverance.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 8.3.17; purport)
