The word, oblige, derived from Latin, obligare: from ob – toward + ligare – to bind, means to make someone legally or morally bound to an action or course of action.
To be obliged also means to be indebted or grateful to someone.
In the Gita, 18.66, Lord Krishna says that one who completely surrenders to Him is no longer obliged to suffer the reactions of his or her past sins.
Those who are grateful to Krishna for extending such a generous offer and ungrudgingly accept it are no longer obliged to work hard and suffer in the material world. Instead, they become bound to Krishna by loving service and enjoy life at every second.
“My dear Lord Krishna, until people become Your devotees, their material attachments and desires remain thieves, their homes remain prisons, and their affectionate feelings for their family members remain foot-shackles.”
