Humans have the freedom to place their attention anywhere they wish.
The choice to give one’s attention to a particular topic, object, or task is an investment. When one “pays attention,” one is disbursing an asset.
Bhakti scriptures say that our attention is not only our most valuable asset, but also that a progressive human being must study well the science of how to invest his or her attention to receive the highest return.
For example, Srimad-Bhagavatam says that because human life is exceedingly rare – as well as precariously temporary – one should give one-pointed attention to devotional service.
Bhakti yogis, having received this insider information from the scriptures about how and where to get the best return on their investment, pay exclusive attention to topics about Krishna. They also meditate on Krishna’s forms and do their work to please Him.
“Therefore, with one-pointed attention, one should constantly hear about, glorify, remember and worship the Personality of Godhead, who is the protector of the devotees.” (Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.2.14)
