The phrase, “That’s how I roll,” (which means something like, “that’s my style”; or “that’s how I’m inclined to do things”) has become popular lately.
In the Gita, Krishna describes how in the material world a living being develops his or her inclination toward a particular lifestyle based on how he or she is affected by the three modes of material nature.
“Everyone is forced to act helplessly according to the qualities he has acquired from the modes of material nature; therefore no one can refrain from doing something, not even for a moment.” (Bg. 3.5)
For example, a person in the mode goodness is inclined to live in a tranquil setting like a forest, a person in passion likes the vibration of the city, and a person in ignorance is content to live in filthy places where sinful activities are rife.
In other words, people “roll” in a certain direction because they are pushed by the powerful forces of nature.
On the other hand, one who practices bhakti yoga, which is brings one above the modes of nature, gains conscious control over his or her lifestyle and rolls to Krishna.
