People have a natural fascination with melody and rhythm because song and beat originate in the spiritual world. To satisfy their craving to hear something pleasing, each year, all over the world people in every culture throng to hear musical concerts and to buy billions of dollars worth of recorded songs.
The Vedas say that the material world originates from sound and that by hearing material sound one can increase one’s standing in the mundane world. By the same token, by taking shelter of transcendental sound, one can not only be at once be in touch with the spiritual world, but can enter into it.
The Vedanta-sutra says Anavrttih sabdat, “One may be liberated by sound.”
Utilizing this principle bhakti yogis deliberately turn their ears toward transcendental sound. By so doing they develop an attraction for it, become free from the material identification, and taste the happiness of the spiritual world.
Narada Muni told his disciple, Vyasadeva: “O great sage, as soon as I got a taste for the Personality of Godhead, my attention to hear of the Lord was unflinching. And as my taste developed, I could realize that it was only in my ignorance that I had accepted gross and subtle coverings, for both the Lord and I are transcendental.” (SB 1.5.27)
