I went to buy a new pair of walking shoes the other day. The man in the store brought me the ones I wanted in the size that I needed.
I had been determined to step in, get the shoes and walk back out without becoming entangled.
However, in an instant, my mind invented a conundrum when the salesman asked, “Yellow or blue?”
“Yel’ . . . no, Blue!” My mind jackknifed at the choice.
I finally took the yellow shoes, but on the way home, my mind said, “You should’ve taken the blue!”
Slightly annoyed at my fickle mind and to teach him a lesson in simplicity, I invoked this image of Sukadeva Goswami appearing before Maharaja Pariksit on the bank of the Ganges:
“At that moment there appeared the powerful son of Vyasadeva [Sukadeva], who traveled over the earth disinterested and satisfied with himself. He did not manifest any symptoms of belonging to any social order or status of life. He was surrounded with women and children, and he dressed as if others had neglected him.”
(Srimad-bhagavatam 1.19.25)
Simply by remembering Sukadeva Goswami who was beyond the world of petty choices and content in self-realization, I at once felt satisfaction and for the moment my mind gave up its wrangling ways.Om Tat Sat
