Ten days ago, I planted Tulasi seeds and everyday since watered them with care, waiting eagerly for Srimati Tulasi Devi to make her appearance.
Everyday, I looked fervently to see if she had sprouted, but to no avail.
But, yesterday, the tenth day, I became jubilant when I saw her delicate green leaves starting up through the soil.
I called Nirakula to see this sight and we felt bliss by singing a few mantras together to Tulasi Devi.
Anyone who worships Tulasi Devi will feel happiness in his or her heart.
Because Tulasi Devi is so dear to Krsna, caring for and worshiping her is a most important aspect of devotional service.
“I offer my respectful obeisances to Srimati Tulasi Devi. By seeing her, she devours all sinful reactions. By touching her, she purifies the body. By worshiping her, she takes away all diseases. By watering her, she rescues one from the cycle of birth and death. By planting her, she brings one in the close proximity of Lord Krsna, and by bowing down at her lotus feet, she bestows on with the fruit of pure bhakti.” (Tulasi-pranama)
Waiting for Tulasi Devi to sprout over those ten days, reminded me how one must be patient and confident in the practice of devotional service.
Sastra says that those who unfailingly water the seed of bhakti in their hearts — hearing and chanting about Krsna and avoiding offences — will certainly witness the glorious appearance of Bhakti Devi in their lives.
But, Bhakti Devi is sva-tantra, independent, and we cannot force her to appear. She emerges by her own sweet will.
