Can One Un-send an Email

Have you ever sent an email that you wish you hadn’t?

With one push of a key, the message that you wrote in anger or without waiting for all the information, has zoomed off at the speed of light and is already waiting in the receiver’s inbox.

What can one do? Pretend it didn’t happen? Send another message to explain?

Whatever one decides to do, it’s a sticky situation.

Emails aside. One’s words, even those one intends to be private, eventually get out. When they do, they affect both the speaker and the hearer.

What takes a person only a second to say or write, may be impossible to take back.

According to bhakti scriptures therefore, one who is serious about advancing in spiritual life must carefully control one’s speech.

By speaking truthfully, beneficially, avoiding offensive language and especially by speaking about Krishna or chanting His names – a bhakti yogi not only avoids sticky situations, but he or she also gets purification, inner satisfaction, and other invaluable assets.

Srila Prabhupada:

“The immediate symptom of a Krishna conscious man is that he speaks only of Krishna and of matters relating to Him. Other symptoms then automatically follow . . .” (Bhagavad-gita 2.54)
