In Sanskrit, the word girbana means that one’s words are like arrows: once released, they cannot be taken back.
Making a similar point to Uddhava, Lord Krsna says:
“Sharp arrows which pierce one’s chest and reach the heart do not cause as much suffering as the arrows of harsh, insulting words that become lodged within the heart when spoken by uncivilized men.” (Bhag. 11.23.3)
Just by applying the austerity of speech given by Krsna in the Gita one avoids many difficulties in life and makes steady advancement in devotional service.
Lord Sri Krsna:
“Austerity of speech consists in speaking words that are truthful, pleasing, beneficial, and not agitating to others, and also in regularly reciting Vedic literature.” (Bhagavad-gita 17.15)
